How to sell tickets for a school musical online

Selling tickets online is faster for families and far less work for your team than a paper-and-cash table. Here is a simple way to set it up, plus a few tips to fill more seats.

1. Decide your ticket types and prices

Start with the basics. Most school shows use a few simple types, for example adult and student or senior pricing, plus a free or low-cost option for staff or younger siblings. If your show runs multiple nights, set up each performance as its own date so seats and counts stay separate.

2. Build a seat map, or keep it general admission

If your auditorium has assigned seats, a reserved seat map lets families pick exactly where they sit, which cuts down on confusion at the door and crowding in the good rows. If seating is first come first served, general admission with a simple capacity limit is perfectly fine and even quicker to set up.

3. Set up payments so the money goes to you

Connect a payment account so card payments land with your organization directly. Card processing fees (about 2.9% plus 30 cents) are normal and come out of each transaction. Decide whether the small service fee is added at checkout for the buyer or absorbed by your program, then you are ready to take orders.

4. Share one link everywhere

Once your event page is live, you have a single link to share in every channel: the school newsletter, social media, the marquee, posters with a QR code, and an email to families. One link means one place to buy, and one clean report of who is coming.

5. Send reminders to cut no-shows

Automatic email and text reminders a few days before and the morning of the show keep your event top of mind. Fewer forgotten tickets means fuller houses and a livelier room for your performers.

6. Check in at the door with a phone

On show night, tickets scan right from a phone, including tickets saved to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. A volunteer with a phone can move a line quickly, and you get a live count of who has arrived.

Sell more with shoutouts and merch

A musical is also a fundraiser. Let families buy patron shoutouts that print in the program ("Break a leg, Emma!"), sell program ads to local sponsors, and offer shirts, flowers, or concessions in the same checkout as tickets. It all adds up alongside ticket sales, with one report at the end.
